About the event

Combining the sacred art of breathwork with a deep mindful approach to yoga through Yin meditation, this transformational retreat will create a solid foundation towards personal mastery, creating a profound and healing opportunity to both open the mind and release deep-seated emotions and trauma held within the subconsious layers of the body.

Through guided practices, enfused with philosophy to deepen your understanding and reach higher states of consciousness, this retreat will help you to break free from old patterns, leaving you feeling truly liberated, empowered and enabling you to thrive in all areas of your life. On this retreat we welcome all levels, regardless of experience.

Our weekend retreat programme has been designed to ensure a next level experience that will not only leave you feeling healed and nourished, physically, mentally and emotionally, but will open your eyes to the endless possibilities of improving overall health and wellbeing following the traditional practices of yin yoga, with Buteyko breathework and Open Water Therapy.

Throughout the weekend we provide several opportunities to connect with the elements through activities like paddleboarding and guided hikes. Furthermore, Ananda's location perfectly illustrates Conistons natural beauty, surrounded by vegetation and serenaded by birds, it is impossible not to be soothed by the nature that surrounds us!

Food is our passion and our dining experiences will nourish on all levels. Our ethos is to provide healthy, nutrient-rich, plant-based meals to fuel and energize the body. With our onsite therapists at hand, you're able to find that much deserved time to add an extra layer of indulgence to your weekend retreat experience.

Breath Workshops & Open Water Therapy lead by Kevin O'Neill

" A question we do not often ask and we are not really taught enough about at school is what is breathing?

Breathing is the biggest pastime of a human being, it is the very first thing we learn to do from birth, so why, when it impacts so much on our physical and mental wellbeing, do we not pay more attention to it?

Healthy breathing is a combination of three things, biomechanics, biochemistry and volume (the amount of air we breathe per minute). These three pillars of respiratory function work hand in hand with one another and if one of these is compromised it directly affects the other. Through the practice of breath awareness and mastering practices such as holding the breath, we can halt, restore and repair years of over breathing, shallow breathing or chronic hyperventilation.

There is a common belief that the more air we breathe, the healthier we are. Few people realise that in order to increase blood flow and oxygen delivery to the tissues, breathing should be slowed down so that less air enters the body. You know that you are taking less air into the lungs than normal when you experience a tolerable feeling of air hunger. Within a few minutes of continued slowing of the breath to experience air hunger, body temperature increases to indicate an improvement to blood circulation. At the same time, there is an increase to watery saliva in the mouth – traditionally observed in Yoga as activation of the body’s relaxation response, helping to improve overall wellbeing.

I am a fully qualified Buteyko instructor and trained with Patrick Mckeown and his team at the Buteyko Clinic in Ireland.

I have been successfully using the Buteyko Method to improve my own respiratory health and the health of thousands of others since being introduced to the power of this knowledge. Buteyko works hand in hand with open water sessions, helping to regulate the bodies temperature so you can experience the (enjoyable) pain of plunging into freezing cold water.

Open water therapy is rewarded with a tsunami of endorphins, and afterward, you feel happy as a clam. Once you’ve swum in a 4°C lake, you feel like you can take on anything the day throws at you. This feeling of euphoria is largely down to the release of hormones that help the body respond to stress caused by the shock of cold water."

Yin Yoga lead by Madeline Diaz Meiners

"I am a firm believer that we find what we are seeking when the time is right for us..... This is exactly how my journey with Yin started.

As a practioner of yoga for 22 years, and teacher of 10 years, I have delved into many different styles of yoga lead by many different inspiring teachers around the world. With a background that originated from the traditions of Satyananda yoga, my teachings have always been strongly inspired by the traditional yogic practices of breathework and meditation.

Yin works on the subconscious mind, unravelling the stuff we never truly dealt with at the opportune moment when it was held in the conscious mind. As a modern society of suppressants and consumers, we have become masterful at avoiding any kind of emotional discomfort. Over time, all our residual traumas become so deeply ingrained into the subtle fascia layers of our bodies, that they form part of the pysche, lurking deep within, waiting to be later triggered over and over again.

When you practice Yin yoga, you are creating nuturing space within the body and mind, to be present and to experience all of your emotions in full without the feeling of overwhelment. Learning the art of softening, of letting go, and allowing your emotions be present encourages the body to heal and release. Suppressing our feelings day by day becomes exhausting on the mind. Yin yoga creates an internal environment which encourages the mind and body to let go of emotions that aren't serving us well, and become aware of the things that need more of our attention. This helps work through mental blockages and find more peace, as the practice heals us deeply on a cellular level.

The most amazing thing about Yin is it's accessibilty to all levels. You don't even need to know what a downward dog pose is, or even tried yoga before, to be able to connect to Yin.... all you need is an open mind and the desire to heal. It's a meditation practice in itself and amazing for those who have never felt capable of entering into a meditation, as you are effectively meditating on sensations within your body - and this is where the magic happens.

The practice of Yin yoga alongside the breathework and open water therapy is a true match made in heaven. They promote healing on very similar levels where the body and mind are trained to soften to let go."
